Yoder, Ruth Ellen Yoder

May 24, 1922 - Jan. 31, 2015

WEST LIBERTY, Ohio - Ruth Ellen Yoder, 92, of West Liberty, passed away Jan. 31 at Mary Rutan Hospital after a short time of rapidly declining health.

She was born in West Liberty to Earl M. and Barbara Allgyer Yoder on May 24, 1922.

Her four siblings, Olive, Roy, Stanley and an infant brother, Byron, preceded her in death.

Ruth Ellen had been living at Green Hills Retirement Community where she enjoyed the camaraderie of friends and relatives.

Ruth Ellen earned her teaching certificate at Goshen (Ind.) College and began her career in West Liberty in 1944. During the 20 plus years when she returned to teach in West Liberty, she earned her bachelor's degree at Ohio Northern University.

Ruth Ellen and Gail Hubert Yoder, high school sweethearts, were married June 5, 1946. They moved to Gail's family farm where he farmed and where he and Ruth Ellen raised their three sons, Jerold (Susan) of La Mesa, Calif., Samuel (Arleta) of Bristol, Ind., and Charles (Deborah) of Marion. Their family also includes her beloved grandchildren, Simon (Barbara), Adam, Abigail (Joshua) Damron, Joel, Hannah, Naomi and Alex, and four great-grandchildren. Gail passed away April 10, 2011, at the age of 89.

Ruth Ellen, a musician at heart, became an accomplished pianist and, as an adult, an organist. She graciously and gladly used her talent as an accompanist at South Union Mennonite Church, where she was a member. Even into her 80s, she continued to be an organist for church services.

As the alto and bass singers, along with Roy and Wilma Yoder, (Ruth Ellen's brother and Gail's sister) Ruth Ellen and Gail formed the Yoder Quartet, which sang at weddings, funerals, banquets and other special events during a span of 40 years. She also was the driving force behind the Yoder Family Singers, composed of the Yoder Quartet's families, which sang at churches across Ohio and into Pennsylvania and Canada.

Although Ruth Ellen was a long-time resident of Ohio, she spent most of 2012 and 2013 in the Elkhart, Ind., area at Eastlake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she was cared for with kindness and compassion. During that time she attended Hively Avenue Mennonite Church and often visited Fellowship of Hope Mennonite Church.

To know Ruth Ellen was to know joy! Welcoming and warm, she had the ability to make people of all ages feel special. She was kind and jolly with an infectious laugh. Throughout her life, she attempted to live as a child of God, and she looked forward to her home-going.

"Come, you blessed of my Father; inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world." Matthew 25:34.

GOSHEN - S. Glenn Yoder, 80, passed away Monday evening, Nov. 9, at The Maples at Waterford Crossing, where he had been a resident since December 2013.

He was born April 17, 1935, in Porter County, to Harold C. and Sadie M. (Miller) Yoder.

On Aug. 6, 1961, he married Doris Detrow at Eighth Street Mennonite Church in Goshen.

She survives along with a daughter, JoAnn (Ben) Neff of Goshen; two grandchildren, Abbey and Brock Neff; two sisters, Carolyn Leichty of Goshen and Marilyn (Michael) Zellinger of Green Valley, Ariz.; and a brother, Don (Beth) Yoder of Syracuse.

A 1953 graduate of New Paris High School, Glenn attended Goshen College. He served two years of 1-W service at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Glenn resided in Elkhart County for most of his life. For 50 years he was involved with the sales and installation of building materials, owning and operating Millersburg Lumber Co. and then S G & D Sales, until his retirement.

Glenn had many interests which he pursued with vigor and determination. He loved golfing, hunting, fishing, genealogical research and traveling. He was a life member of the NRA and hunted frequently in Idaho and Colorado. He also hunted in Alaska, Canada and Zimbabwe. He visited all 50 states, most Canadian provinces and 24 countries around the world.

A 36-year member of Millersburg Lions Club, Glenn was recognized for selling large quantities of citrus fruit and barbecue chicken for the club's fundraisers. He was deeply devoted to Lions and service to those in need. As governor of District 25-G from 1987 to 1988, he received the 100 Percent Governor's Award. He then served three years as the Lions state membership chair, assisting Lions forming a large number of new clubs in Indiana. He was a Melvin Jones Fellow, the recipient of three prestigious presidential awards from Lions International and received many other commendations. A member of Lions International Pin Traders Club, he collected, designed and sold many Lions trading pins and exchanged them with Lions worldwide.

Glenn was a great storyteller. Friends and relatives enjoyed hearing him tell hilarious stories of his "growing up years" with his siblings on the Syracuse family dairy farm. He was very proud of his family and formed a special bond with JoAnn over fishing, photography and 4-H projects. A kid at heart, Glenn loved spending active time with his grandchildren playing catch and Wiffle ball and building blocks. He later enjoyed watching his grandchildren as they participated in their many activities.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the noon Saturday, Nov. 14, Lions Memorial Service at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. A second memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at College Mennonite Church in Goshen, where Glenn was a member. The Rev. Pamela Yoder will officiate.
